Washing Machine Motor Repair
Motor hums without turning, smells of burning, or throws LE/3E motor errors — doorstep diagnostics for carbon brushes, windings, tacho sensors and inverter drive units.
The Drive Motor — Where Wash Power Begins
Two motor families drive modern washers: brushed universal motors (belt-driven, with replaceable carbon brushes) and brushless inverter direct-drive motors (LG Direct Drive, Samsung Digital Inverter) where the rotor is bolted straight to the drum. Their failure modes differ: brushes wear and glaze on the first type; rotor position sensors, hall wiring and drive electronics fail on the second — each producing spin and agitation faults with motor-error codes like LE or 3E. A burning smell from the vents is the other early warning, and our burning smell guide explains why the cycle should never be retried.
Our motor diagnosis is measured, not guessed: winding balance, earth-bond insulation, brush length, run capacitor health and tacho feedback — separating a motor fault from a drive-board fault before any quote. A slipping or squealing drive around a healthy motor usually points to the belt or clutch instead. Machines that stop mid-cycle altogether are worked through step by step in our not-starting guide.
Motor Faults We Diagnose and Repair
| Fault | Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Worn carbon brushes | Intermittent turn, sparks, weak drive | Brush set replacement |
| Unbalanced windings | Hum, hot smell, mid-cycle stops | Motor replacement / rewind quote |
| Rotor position sensor | LE / 3E errors, erratic rotation | Sensor or hall-wiring repair |
| Seized bearings on shaft | Grinding, locked rotor | Motor or drum bearing service |
| Drive board fault | Healthy motor never energises | PCB repair |
Book motor diagnostics through the washing machine repair service — brushes and sensors are van-stock items, and every motor job carries the 90-day warranty. And if the winding verdict tips towards replacing the whole machine, our repair-or-replace guide keeps that call honest.

Motor Measurements — Windings, Brushes and Feedback Signals
Motor faults are proven with four measurements: winding balance in ohms, insulation to earth, brush length in millimetres, and the tacho or hall feedback signal the board depends on. Our service engineer takes all four before quoting any motor repair, because a humming drum can be a motor, a sensor, a capacitor or the board — each needing a different fix. What each outcome costs is set out in our repair cost guide.
The expected readings are summarised below. Where the motor tests healthy, the fault typically moves to its partners in the drive chain — the run capacitor or the drive board.
| Test | Instrument | Expected Reading | Fault Indication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winding balance | Multimeter (ohms) across each winding set | Near-equal, specification-range readings | Unequal: shorted turns, hot smell, mid-cycle stops |
| Insulation to earth | Insulation (megger) test, winding to body | Well above 1 MΩ | Low reading: earth leakage, trips the mains when running |
| Carbon brush length | Ruler or scale on removed brushes | Above roughly 5 mm, springs firm | Below minimum: sparking, intermittent torque |
| Tacho / hall feedback | Signal check at sensor connector | Steady pulse pattern while the drum turns | Missing or erratic pulses: motor errors with healthy windings |
| Rotor free spin | Hand rotation, power off | Smooth, silent turn | Grit or grinding: shaft bearing wear loading the motor |
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about our washing machine service, repair process, warranty and pricing.
What are the signs of a failing washing machine motor?
The drum turns weakly or not at all while the motor hums, you smell hot wiring or burning during wash, the machine stops mid-cycle with a motor error (LE on LG, 3E on Samsung), or the motor trips the supply. Each symptom maps to a different fault — brushes, windings, sensor or board.
Can carbon brushes be replaced, or is a new motor needed?
Brushes are wearable and replacing them is inexpensive — brush length under about 5mm means replacement time. But if the windings test unbalanced or shorted to earth, the motor itself needs replacement or rewinding, which we quote honestly before proceeding.
Do inverter washing machine motors need different repair?
Yes. Direct-drive inverter motors (LG, Samsung) have no brushes — their failures live in the rotor position sensor, the hall sensor wiring, or the drive board. Diagnosis is electronic rather than mechanical, and needs the right test equipment.
How are motor windings tested with a multimeter?
The service engineer measures resistance across each winding set: the readings should be balanced and within the motor's specification, with no continuity from any winding to the motor body. Unbalanced readings mean shorted turns that cause hot smells and mid-cycle stops, while any earth path is an immediate safety fault. Both outcomes end in a motor or rewind decision from our motor repair service.
What does a tachometer or hall sensor check involve?
Direct-drive and brushed motors alike feed rotation data back to the board through a tacho generator or hall sensor; the technician watches that signal at the sensor connector while the drum turns. A missing or erratic pulse pattern makes the board throw motor errors even with perfect windings — the classic source of LE-class motor errors that a winding test alone would clear wrongly.
When do carbon brushes need replacing, exactly?
Brush length is measured against a minimum — below roughly 5 mm the spring pressure fades, the contact sparks and the motor loses torque intermittently. Sparking at the vents plus a stuttering drum is the outward sign; the measurement confirms it before a brush replacement is booked.
How is a motor's insulation to earth tested?
An insulation (megger) test between the windings and the motor body should read well above 1 MΩ; a collapse means moisture, carbon dust or winding breakdown is leaking current to earth. That fault trips the mains the moment the motor runs, and it is one of the first things measured in any tripping investigation.
How long does a washing machine motor last?
A well-kept universal motor often serves 10–14 years with one or two brush changes, and inverter direct-drive motors frequently outlive the rest of the machine. What kills them early is chronic overload — jammed drums, seized bearings, slipping belts — so mechanical faults elsewhere deserve fast attention from our drum repair service.
Is a rewound motor as good as a new one?
A professional rewind with correctly gauged wire and proper insulation approaches original performance, but quality varies enormously between shops, and an inverter direct-drive motor usually cannot be rewound economically at all. We quote rewind versus replacement honestly after the winding measurements — the brands and options we carry are on our brands page.
Which parts share the motor's failure chain?
The run capacitor that gives a brushed motor its starting torque, the drive belt it turns, the clutch it spins through, and the drive board that powers it all load the motor in one chain. That is why motor diagnosis on our motor service always crosses-checks the capacitor and the board before condemning the motor itself.

Motor faults wear two faces — mechanical (brushes, bearings, couplings) and electrical (windings, tach feedback). Capacitor-side failures are covered in the capacitor service, and belt-drive wear in the belt service.
