Suspension & Dampers — What Keeps a Spin Civilised

A spin cycle pushes a water-logged drum to 800–1400 RPM; the shock absorbers (front loaders) and suspension rods (top loaders) are what turn that energy into controlled damping instead of a walking machine. Worn dampers lose their resistance, tub travel grows, and the result is the familiar thump-and-walk — plus constant UE/UB imbalance errors as the sensor fights the wobble. When the imbalance protection aborts the spin outright, the outcome reads like a spin failure with laundry still soaked.

Our inspection covers the full damping chain: damper resistance and travel, rod seating, counterweight bolts, and drum-to-tub clearance — because a worn bearing can masquerade as a suspension fault by roughening the spin. Replacements are fitted as matched pairs and verified with a loaded spin test. Sustained shake also fatigues the transmission on top loaders, which is why the first thump rarely waits.

Vibration Faults — Cause and Cure

Washing machine vibration faults and repair actions

Ignoring suspension wear is expensive: sustained vibration fatigues the tub, harnesses and board connectors. Book the repair service at the first persistent thump. What damper and rod sets cost is set out in our repair cost guide.

Suspension Measurements — Free-Play, Seating and Torque Checks

Suspension diagnosis is a sequence of physical tests: tub free-play and rebound, damper stroke resistance, rod seating in their cups, and counterweight bolt torque. Each result steers the suspension repair — dampers, rods, bolts or simply levelling — without any guesswork about where the shake originates. Households that prefer scheduled checks find them built into our AMC plans.

The findings below are what a healthy machine gives. Where damping tests clean but the spin still rough, attention shifts to the drum bearings or to machine levelling, per our installation service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about our washing machine service, repair process, warranty and pricing.

Why does my washing machine shake violently during spin?

In order: worn shock absorbers (front loaders), fatigued suspension rods (top loaders), an unlevel floor, a shifted counterweight, or simply an unbalanced single-item load. If violent shaking happens on every cycle regardless of load, the hardware is due for inspection.

The machine shows UE or UB and refuses to spin — is it broken?

UE/UB is the imbalance protection: the sensor detected the tub isn't balanced and slowed or skipped the spin. Redistribute the laundry and retry. If it trips constantly with normal loads, worn suspension or a sticky sensor is the cause — we test both.

Should shock absorbers be replaced in pairs?

Yes — dampers are always replaced as a matched set so the tub damps evenly. Replacing one side creates uneven tub travel that wears the new part faster and keeps the vibration alive.

How is a shock absorber's free-play tested?

The technician pulls the tub corner through its travel and releases it: a healthy damper resists smoothly through the full stroke and settles the tub after a single bounce. Zero resistance, a free-falling tub or a bounce that keeps going means the damping is spent — the same free-play check guides every suspension replacement we quote. Constant imbalance trips are explained in our UE error guide.

What does a suspension rod check involve on a top loader?

Each rod is lifted to confirm it is fully seated in its upper and lower cups, then the tub is pressed to feel for equal resistance on all four corners. An unseated rod clunks at spin start, and a fatigued one lets that corner of the tub sag — both findings change the vibration diagnosis completely.

Why are counterweight bolts checked during suspension work?

The concrete or cast counterweights bolted to the tub are what keep a spin balanced; a bolt working loose lets the weight shift and slam on every spin start — a sound often mistaken for suspension failure. Torque-checking those bolts is standard in our damper and rod service.

How long do shock absorbers and suspension rods last?

Typically 8–10 years, but chronic overloading, off-level installation and ignoring the first small thumps wear them out years sooner. Levelling the machine correctly at installation and loading sensibly are what protect the damping set.

Are aftermarket dampers as good as original shock absorbers?

The damping curve is the specification that matters: a matched-quality damper resists through the stroke like the original, while cheap ones are either near-free or near-solid — both ruin tub travel. We fit matched, brand-correct sets on every suspension job, one side never alone; the brands we stock are on our brands page.

How does a technician separate a suspension fault from a bearing fault?

Both produce a violent-feeling spin, so the drum is turned by hand with the machine off: bearing wear announces itself as a gritty rumble independent of tub travel, while failed damping shows as free bouncing with a smooth-sounding drum. Separating them prevents the classic mistake of new dampers over a dying bearing — the bearing end of that check is described in our drum repair guide.

Which parts sit in the same failure chain as the suspension?

The counterweights, the tub Spider and mounts, the machine's levelling feet, and the imbalance sensor that aborts spins all interact with the damping set — sustained vibration fatigues every one of them, including board connectors (see our PCB repair service). That is why the first persistent thump deserves a booking, not a shrug.

Components live in chains — a weak capacitor stresses a clutch, a clogged pump starves a pressure sensor. These related parts, faults and services show how the system connects.

Suspension parts fail as a set — when one absorber fades, its pair follows within months. The vibration symptom map is in the vibration guide, and noise-driven wear in the drum service.
